Feeding Accessories:
Feeding dishes and towers safeguard the surfaces and substrates in your outworld, making it much easier to maintain cleanliness. Feeding inserts and nano dishes help keep test tubes clean, and accessories simplify the process of inserting and removing ant food.
Using liquid feeders can often lead to wasted sugar and protein solutions due to the large volume they can hold compared to what ants actually need. In addition, small colonies typically do not consume the entire contents of a large liquid feeder, resulting in spoilage and gassing off, causing the liquids to spill throughout the outworld. In essence, it is crucial to provide ants with ample food, but only in appropriate quantities.
Natural liquid solutions like sugar water usually remain viable for no more than 48 hours. For colonies of a smaller size, we recommend using larger liquid feeders for clean drinking water, which can last longer without spoiling, and smaller dishes to offer a few drops of sugary liquids. The nano tower liquid feeder is the smallest commercially available product, potentially setting a record for the tiniest liquid feeder. This feeder can be used effectively with smaller colonies.
Ant colonies perform better with smaller, fresh, and frequent feedings rather than larger, less frequent portions that may not stay fresh. This is primarily because ants rely on the fluids in their food instead of dry solids brought back to the nest. As a result, food left in the outworld for too long tends to dry up.
Pre- Made Ant FooD:
FormiSyrup Gold is a blend of carefully sourced organic honey and maple syrup tested for safety (no pesticides). In contrast, FormiSyrup Green is a pre-diluted, ready-to-use sweet syrup with a longer shelf life due to its preservatives. Additionally, we offer FormiProtein, primarily made from dried black soldier fly larvae and salmon fish. Depending on the species, it can be used in its dry form, as a wet paste, or as a liquid solution. FormiProtein is an occasional supplement for when fresh insects (which ants prefer) are unavailable.
As for FormiSyrup Gold's shelf life, after serving, it can last a reasonable amount of time when used straight from the bottle, as its high sugar concentration acts as a preservative, similar to how honey can last for months in the pantry without issues. However, ants prefer diluted, runny solutions rather than thick sticky sugars. Therefore, we recommend mixing one part FormiSyrup Gold with one to two parts water. Once diluted, it will remain fresh for only 48 hours. In summary, a solution with a 60% sugar content or higher can last for months in the pantry, but anything lower quickly reduces its shelf life.
FormiSyrup Green stays fresh and avoids going rancid for extended periods due to its minimal use of ant-safe preservatives. These preservatives enable the syrup to remain fresh for up to 6 months without refrigeration, making it a convenient and practical option for ant keepers. The brilliant green colour adds an appealing touch to the ants' diet and the ant-keeping setup. Each ant keeper must decide whether the use of preservatives in FormiSyrup Green meets their preferences and their colony's needs.
